What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a situation that requires immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, save an injured tooth, treat a serious infection, or stop bleeding. If you suspect that you are experiencing a dental emergency, contact our office as soon as possible. Our emergency dentist will guide you and explain the steps you should take to stabilize your condition while waiting for dental treatment.

At Great Lakes Dentures and Implants, we offer same-day appointments to ensure you receive prompt urgent care. If you experience a dental emergency outside of our business hours, please call our number for guidance. If, however, you experience a life-threatening emergency, make sure to call 911.

What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Here are some of the most common dental emergencies and care tips while waiting for emergency dental care.

  1. Tooth Pain: Toothaches often result from food caught between teeth, so flossing may help. We also recommend rinsing with warm water and contacting our office for an appointment. Never place aspirin on your tooth as that can damage your gums and tooth enamel.
  2. A Knocked-Out Tooth: We don't recommend replanting a knocked-out baby tooth. However, if you knock out a permanent tooth, receiving emergency dental care within an hour of injury provides the best chance of saving it. First, call our office, then pick up the tooth by the crown without touching the roots. Gently rinse the tooth and try to return it to its socket. If that's not possible, wrap it in clean gauze, submerge it in milk to prevent it from drying out, and bring it to your emergency appointment.
  3. A Loose, Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth: Call our office to speak with our emergency dentist right away. While waiting to be seen by our team, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to your cheek to manage any pain or swelling. Collect any pieces of the tooth, if any, and bring them to your emergency appointment.
  4. An Abscess: Contact our office immediately if you notice a pimple-like bump on your tooth. Depending on the extent of infection, we may recommend a root canal or even a tooth extraction. An abscess will not resolve on its own. It is a potentially serious infection that requires urgent dental care.
  5. Bleeding from the Mouth: Place gentle pressure on the area to help stop the bleeding. If there's severe, uncontrollable bleeding, head to your nearest emergency room.

How Can You Avoid a Dental Emergency?

The best way to avoid a dental emergency is to maintain routine dental exams and cleanings at our Plainwell dental office. Our team will monitor your oral health and identify dental problems in their earliest stages before they progress and require emergency care. Moreover, if you grind your teeth at night or play contact sports, wearing a custom mouthguard is the best way to prevent injury to your teeth and gums.
